The European Union could “respond swiftly and decisively” in response to what it deems “unwarranted” travel bans issued by the United States against five Europeans involved in fighting online hate and misinformation, a European Commission spokesperson has said.

EU Officials Condemn US Action as ‘Intimidation’

Officials from Europe such as Emmanuel Macron accused the US administration of “coercion and intimidation”, after the visa restrictions were placed on individuals who have been central to efforts to introduce laws regulating American tech companies.

“For too long, European activists have led coordinated campaigns to pressure US companies to punish US perspectives they oppose,” stated a senior US official in a social media post. “The current administration will not stand for such actions of censorship beyond its borders.”

Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials supported France in criticizing the decision.
